How the Gold Fear and Greed Index works
The Gold Fear and Greed Index turns five public inputs into one number from 0 (extreme fear) to 100 (extreme greed). It is built to be read in ten seconds and checked in ten minutes.
- Gold volatility (GVZ): the options market's expected swing in gold. High volatility means fear.
- Price momentum: how far gold sits from its recent average.
- Strength (RSI): whether gold is overbought or oversold over the last 14 sessions.
- US dollar: a stronger dollar usually weighs on gold, a weaker one supports it.
- Fund positioning (CFTC): how funds are positioned in gold futures, from the weekly Commitments of Traders report.
Each input is scaled to 0 to 100 and the five are averaged. The reading is published every day. It describes mood, it does not predict price, and it is not financial advice.
